ISO 17235 Test Standard for Leather Softness

The ISO 17235 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a non-destructive method for determining the softness of leather. It can be applied to all non-hard leathers such as shoe leathers, upholstery leathers, leather goods leathers and clothing leathers.

ISO 17235 Test Applicability

A cylindrical rod of a given mass is lowered at a certain rate onto a securely clamped area of skin. The swelling of the skin produced is recorded as softness. The circular opening should be 35,0 mm ± 0,1 mm in diameter.

Metal rings are used that can fit into the opening and reduce the diameter of the opening to 25,0 mm ± 0,1 mm and 20,0 mm ± 0,1 mm, respectively. The clamps can hold the skin securely when maximum force is applied, both before the load pin is released and while releasing the portion above the opening to move.

The cylindrical load pin, 4,9 mm ± 0,1 mm in diameter and 11,5 mm ± 0,1 mm in length, rigidly connected to a cylindrical mass, The combined mass of the Load pin and the cylindrical load shall be 530 g ± 10 g. Loading pin guiding means should be used so that the loading pin moves perpendicular to the skin surface and the vertical movement of the loading pin is limited to a distance of 11,5 mm ± 0,1 mm.

Load pin lowering means for the load pin to travel its full permissible distance
It should be 1,5 mm ± 0,5 mm in 11,5 s ± 0,1 s. To directly measure the tension of the skin with the load pin, a gauge reading up to 0,1 mm must be available.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of leather softness testing services, there are also ISO 17235 standard tests.
