ISO 17696 Footwear - Test Methods for Uppers, Linings and Socks - Tear Strength

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 17696 standard. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the ISO 17696 standard specifies a test method for assessing the tear strength of uppers, linings and inner socks or complete upper assemblies, regardless of material, to assess suitability for end use.

Test specimens may be cut from materials likely to be used for uppers or socks, or from make-up uppers or finished shoes. When the liner material is permanently attached to the top material, test pieces from the complete top assemblies
is prepared.

Six test specimens are cut from the sheet material or the upper part of the shoe. If fabric shoe uppers are being tested, the test sample dimensions should be considered minimum dimensions and, if possible, a larger size to avoid yarn slippage.
the test sample should be cut.

For sheet materials, test specimens should be cut from various locations along the entire usable width and length of the sheet material. For a material with a woven structure this will avoid any two samples containing the same warp or weft threads.

A test specimen with a single slit to form two legs, with the slit parallel to the axis of the machine, and one leg in each jaw.
loaded into a tensile testing machine to be compressed. The jaws are spread apart to tear the material until the tear spreads to one side of the test specimen. The initial force required to initiate the tear is the initial force required to sustain the tear.
The median force, the maximum force required to sustain the tear, and the type of tear are recorded.

ISO 17696 specifies a test method for assessing the tear strength of uppers, linings and inner socks or complete upper assemblies, regardless of material, in order to evaluate suitability for end use.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 17696 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
