ISO 17881-2 Textile - Determination of Specific Flame Retardants - Part 2: Phosphorus Flame Retardants

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 17881-2 standard. This part of the ISO 17881 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifies a test method for the determination of certain phosphorous flame retardants in textiles by high performance liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).

The method is applicable for all kinds of textile products. For tris(1-aziridinyl)phosphineoxide (TEPA), only unbound TEPA can be extracted.

ISO 17881-2 Textile - Determination of Specific Flame Retardants - Part 2: Phosphorus Flame Retardants

This International Standard contains information that could be harmful to health if adequate precautions are not taken.
requires the use of substances or procedures. It expresses only technical compliance and does not relieve the user from legal obligations regarding health and safety at any stage. In the preparation of this International Standard it has been assumed that the application of its provisions is entrusted to suitably qualified and experienced persons.

Flame retardants are removed from the textile sample with an acetone ultrasonic generator. Flame retardants in the sample are identified and measured by HPLC-MS/MS.

A mixed working solution of three flame retardants in acetonitrile is prepared and diluted to a range of suitable concentrations depending on these test needs. At least five appropriate dilutions of the calibration sets are selected to generate the calibration curve and perform the HPLC-MS/MS analysis.

The pieces are placed in a tightly closed bottle and 20 ml of acetone are added. The bottle is placed in an ultrasonic generator at 40 °C for 40 minutes. The extract is filtered and transferred to a 100 ml flask (4.5). 20 ml of acetone is added to the residue and the flask is placed in the ultrasonic generator for 40 minutes removal of the residue at 20 °C. The extract is filtered and mixed into the flask.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 17881-2 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
