ISO 18369 Ophthalmic Optics - Contact Lenses

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 18369 standard. The ISO 18369 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), defines and defines terms applicable to the physical, chemical and optical properties, manufacture and use of contact lenses. Provides a glossary of terms and, where appropriate, the international symbol and abbreviation associated with a particular term.

This document also defines terms related to contact lens care products. It also includes classifications of contact lens materials and gives recommendations for labeling contact lens properties.

The ISO 18369 series applies to contact lenses, which are devices that are worn on the anterior surface of the eye in contact with the preocular tear film. This document covers hard (hard) corneal and scleral contact lenses as well as soft contact lenses. Hard lenses retain their shape. Soft contact lenses are easily deformed and require support for proper shape.

The terms and definitions list does not include all ISO terms, definitions and symbols used in the contact lens field. It is intended to be a convenient reference source where content is compiled from the text of these and other ISO standards applicable to the manufacture, evaluation, measurement, labeling and marketing of contact lenses and contact lens care products. Added an alphabetical index for quick locating terms.

The words are grouped under various headings according to the reference numbers according to the general category in which each word logically falls. The preferred form of each term is listed on the first line after the reference number. Other accepted forms are placed on the next lines after the preferred form. All accepted terms are in bold type.

A few obsolete and superseded terms are listed for historical reference and convenience and aid understanding, but are noted to be deprecated and no longer used. Legacy and superseded terms are not in bold so that they can be clearly identified as historically used terms.

Contact lenses are primarily used for the correction of refractive errors, but they can also be used for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. The materials used are divided into two main categories as hard and soft. The former consists mainly of corneal lenses and, to a lesser extent, scleral lenses. Both types can be made of gas-permeable materials or gas-tight materials. Soft lenses are primarily produced from hydrogel materials. Few lenses contain both a hard and soft material.

In terms of vision correction, contact lenses can be made as single-focal, bifocal, multifocal or progressive lenses. Surface designs can be spherical, aspherical, toric or complex.

The wearing modality can be casual wear, flexible wear or long-term wear. Typical replacement schedules for soft lenses are daily, biweekly, or monthly. Hard lenses and some soft lenses are changed less frequently, for example once a year.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 18369 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
