This standard specifies a method for determining the (out-of-plane) tear strength of paper. It can also be used for low weight boards if the tear resistance is within range of the device.
This standard does not apply to corrugated board, but can be applied to the components of such boards. It is not suitable for determining the tear resistance of multi-directional paper (or cardboard) in the cross direction.
The average force per sheet required to sustain the tear initiated by an initial cut in the test piece is applied. If the first cut is in the machine direction, the result is the machine direction tear resistance; Similarly, if the first cut is in the diagonal direction, the result is given as the tear resistance in the diagonal direction. The tear strength is expressed in millinewtons (mN).
