ISO 20567-1, Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Stone Crushing Resistance of Coatings - Part 1: Multiple Impact Test

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 20567-1 standard. This standard specifies three methods for assessing the resistance of automobile polishes and other coatings to cooled iron grit projected onto the tested surface to simulate the effect of small stones.

ISO 20567-1, Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Stone Crushing Resistance of Coatings - Part 1: Multiple Impact Test

In the automobile industry, multi-layer paint coatings are applied to car bodies for protection. Sand, road metal and other materials can damage these pavements causing individual layers to come off or the entire pavement to separate from the substrate.

Stone crushing can be simulated by single or multiple impact tests. ISO 20567-1 describes multiple impact testing; ISO 20567-2 and ISO 20567-3 define single impact tests.

The stone impact resistance of the tested pavement is checked by briefly projecting a large number of small sharp-edged bodies onto it. The material used in the test is cooled iron grit that is projected onto the pavement at an angle using compressed air. The extent of the damage will depend not only on the angle, but also on the pressure level, the mass of the shells, the duration of the shelling and the design of the tester.
