It can be performed as a single test to investigate the effects of vertical impact, or as part of a series of tests designed to measure a package's ability to withstand a distribution system with a vertical impact hazard.
It is the lifting of the test package onto a solid plane surface and releasing it to strike that surface (impact surface) after free fall. Atmospheric conditions, drop height and attitude of the package are predetermined. An appendix gives the predetermined attitude of the test suite.
