ISO 2271 Surfactants - Detergents - Determination of Anionic-Active Substance by Manual or Mechanical Direct Two-Phase Titration Procedure

The ISO 2271 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a manual or mechanical method for the determination of anionic-active substance in detergents. The relative molecular mass of the anionic active substance must be known. The method is not valid if there are cationic surfactants.

ISO 2271 Surfactants - Detergents - Determination of Anionic-Active Substance by Manual or Mechanical Direct Two-Phase Titration Procedure

The substance is determined in the presence of an indicator consisting of a mixture of cationic dye (dimidium bromide) and anionic dye (acid blue 1) by titration with a standard volumetric cationic-active solution (benzethonium-chloride) in the presence of an aqueous and chloroform phase.

The method can be applied to solids or aqueous solutions of the active ingredient. The relative molecular mass of the anionic active substance must be known.

The method is not applicable if cationic surfactants are present.

Therefore, the manual method is applicable to the determination of alkylbenzene sulfonates; alkane sulfonates, sulfates and hydroxysulfates; alkylphenol sulfates; fatty alcohol methoxy and ethoxysulfates; dialkylsulfosuccinates and other active ingredients containing one hydrophilic group per molecule.

The mechanical method is applicable to all the products mentioned above, provided that it gives results comparable to those obtained by the manual method.

Soap, urea and tetraacetic acid salts do not mix. In the presence of non-ionic surface agents, their effects must be evaluated in each particular case.

Detergent formulations include sodium chloride, sulfates, borates, tripolyphosphates, perborates, silicates, etc. Typical inorganic compounds, such as , do not mix, but bleaching agents other than perborate must be removed prior to analysis and the sample must be completely soluble in water.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 2271 standard tests.
