Applicable to thermal insulation products. The tests described in this standard do not determine pure shear behavior, but measure the effects of two opposite treatments for the major faces of the test sample. However, the test is traditionally referred to in this text as cutting.
A test specimen is subjected to a shear stress transmitted to the test specimen through rigid supports to which it is attached. The corresponding force-displacement curve is determined.
Tests performed using the single test sample method produced results for shear strength with more dispersed results at larger thicknesses, showing that the result is dependent on the test sample thickness. Tests using the double test specimen method also showed test specimen thickness to influence shear strength results.
A testing machine capable of applying a sufficient force within the maximum displacement experienced in the shear test. It must be able to operate at a constant travel speed of (3 ± 0,5) mm/min of the movable head in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the test specimen assembly.
It may be necessary to use a displacement transducer for accurate measurement of the deformation, especially where a thick layer of adhesive is used in the preparation of the test specimen.
Zero or zero displacement of the test specimen can be calculated by subtracting from y, the displacement due to the equipment and the same adhesive thickness measured without the test specimen, for example, replace the test specimen with metal block(s) in a blank test.
