ISO 16862 Paints and Varnishes - Standard Test for Evaluation of Sagging Resistance

ISO 16862 describes test methods for evaluating the sag resistance of paints, varnishes and similar coating materials (coatings) when applied to a substrate and held in a vertical position.

ISO 16862 Paints and Varnishes - Standard Test for Evaluation of Sagging Resistance

Evaluation of sag resistance can be done after the coating has been applied as follows:

  • Using a sag index applicator on a horizontally placed test panel, then to a vertical position;
  • Using a spray gun for application on a substrate in a vertical position.

A pre-shear program is required for a tensile sag test to replicate the deterioration in structure that occurs when thixotropic paints are applied by brush or another practical application method. The procedure therefore includes preliminary cutting of paints just before application. The rotation speed and mixing time will be decided by the interested parties.

The wet film thickness obtained with the application is smaller than the cavity depth of the applicator depending on the viscosity, rheology and application speed. Therefore, the actual wet film thickness applied must be determined and recorded with the largest non-sagging void size.
