ISO 2431 Paints and Varnishes - Standard Test for Determining Flow Time Using Flow Cups

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 2431 standard. This standard specifies a method for determining the flow time of paints, varnishes and related products that can be used to control consistency.

Four flow vessels of similar dimensions but with orifice diameters of 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm are specified. Two methods are given for checking flow vessels for wear and tear.

Replaceable jetted flow cups are not covered by this standard as the close tolerances for supplying the tested material to the jet are not met.

Because the manufacturing tolerances for such flow vessels are greater than those for the flow vessels specified in this document, flow time determinations with immersion flow vessels are less accurate than those obtained with the flow vessels specified in this document.

The method described in this standard is limited to test materials for which the breakpoint of the flow from the orifice of the flow vessel can be determined precisely. This point is difficult to determine and reproduce for materials with flow times close to the upper limit of the measuring range (100 s) due to slowing effects.
