ISO 2439 Flexible Cellular Polymeric Materials - Determination of Hardness - Indentation Technique

The ISO 2439 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifies four methods (A to D) for determining indentation hardness and a method (E) for determining the pressure deflection coefficient and histegenesis loss rate of flexible cellular materials.

ISO 2439 Flexible Cellular Polymeric Materials - Determination of Hardness - Indentation Technique

The indentation stiffness of flexible cellular materials is a measure of their load-bearing properties. ISO 2439 provides a summary of the test parameters and typical force indentation plots obtained by these five methods.

These five methods apply only to latex foam, urethane foam and open cell type pvc foam. The methods mentioned can be used for testing finished articles and for characterization of bulk material.

This International Standard specifies the following methods:

Method A: Determination of the indentation hardness index of 40/30% s, providing a single indentation measurement for laboratory testing purposes;

Method B: Determination of 25%-40%-65%/30% s indentation hardness properties that give information about the shape of the hardness indentation curve;

Method C: Determination of 40% indentation hardness control, a quick procedure suitable for quality control testing;

Method D: Determination of a low indentation hardness index of 25/20 s, a quick procedure suitable as an inspection test;

Method E: Determination of pressure deflection coefficient and hysterical loss ratio, which gives additional information about the load bearing properties of materials.

The results obtained by these methods relate only to the specified test conditions and cannot generally be used directly for design purposes.

Persons using this International Standard should be familiar with normal laboratory practice. This International Standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety problems associated with its use. It is the user's responsibility to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to ensure compliance with any national regulatory requirements.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 27447 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
