ISO 247 Rubber, Standard Test for Ash Determination

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 247 testing. This standard specifies three methods for the determination of ash from raw rubbers, compound rubbers and vulcanizates.

ISO 247 Rubber, Standard Test for Ash Determination

The methods are applicable to raw, compound or vulcanized rubbers of the M, N, O, R and U families described in ISO 1629, but excluding:

  • Method A is not used for the determination of chlorine, bromine or iodine-containing compound or ash from vulcanized rubbers;
  • Method B is used for compound or vulcanized rubbers containing chlorine, bromine or iodine. It should not be used for non-compound rubbers;
  • Method C is intended to be used for the determination of ash from raw, compound or vulcanized rubber that does not contain chlorine, bromine or iodine by wrapping the test portion in ashless filter paper;
  • Lithium and fluorine compounds can react with silica crucibles to form volatile compounds, yielding low ash results. Platinum crucibles will therefore be used for ashing of fluorine-containing and lithium polymerized rubbers.

This standard does not cover the interpretation of ash results regarding the inorganic chemical content of a compound or vulcanizate. This is the responsibility of the analyst, who must be aware of the behavior of rubber additives at high temperatures.
