ISO 2528 Plate Materials - Determination of Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) - Gravimetric (Plate) Method

This method is generally not recommended if the delivery rate is expected to be less than 1 g/m2 per day or for materials thicker than 3 mm. In such cases, the method specified in ISO 9932 is preferred.

The method is not applicable to film materials that have been damaged by hot wax or have shrunk significantly under the test conditions used. For some purposes it may be necessary to determine the transmission rate of crumpled material.

Test vessels, dishes, shallow, glass, aluminum or stainless steel and large enough to be placed on the balance to be used, should be light but tough and resistant to corrosion under test conditions. Plates made of Al 209 grade aluminum as specified in ISO 99,5 and protected by chemical or anodic oxidation are suitable.

Each plate has a groove around the edge to seal the test piece with wax. This groove has a profile such that the test piece can be closed over the opening of the container and no water vapor can enter or exit the plate from the sides of the test piece.
