ISO 2528 Plate Materials - Determination of Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) - Gravimetric (Plate) Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 2528 standard. The ISO 2528 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a method for determining the water vapor transmission rate (often erroneously called permeability) of sheet materials.

ISO 2528 Plate Materials - Determination of Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) - Gravimetric (Plate) Method

This method is generally not recommended if the delivery rate is expected to be less than 1 g/m2 per day or for materials thicker than 3 mm. In such cases, the method specified in ISO 9932 is preferred.

The method is not applicable to film materials that have been damaged by hot wax or have shrunk significantly under the test conditions used. For some purposes it may be necessary to determine the transmission rate of crumpled material.

This document describes a method that can theoretically be applied to any sheet material. In practice, its main use is for flat, usually thin materials that can be processed to form a water vapor resistant barrier, such as paper, cardboard, plastic films or paper laminates with film or metal foil, and for fabrics coated with rubber or plastic.

The water vapor pressure difference is an essential part of this test and in this case it was not possible to adopt the conditions recommended in ISO 554. Also, the limits of temperature and humidity control are stricter than those required for normal testing.

The purpose of this test is to give reliable water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) values through simple apparatus. However, the use of the results of any particular application should be based on experience.

Conduction rate is not a linear function of temperature or generally of relative humidity difference. Therefore, a determination conducted under certain conditions is not necessarily comparable to a determination conducted under other conditions. Therefore, the test conditions should be chosen to be as close as possible to the conditions of use.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 2528 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
