ISO 2811-1 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Density - Pycnometer Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 2811-1 standard. ISO 2811-1 specifies a method for determining the density of paints, varnishes and related products using a metal or Gay-Lussac pycnometer.

ISO 2811-1 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Density - Pycnometer Method

The method is limited to materials with low or medium viscosity at the test temperature. The Hubbard pycnometer can be used for high viscosity materials.

A pycnometer is filled with the tested product. Density is calculated from the mass of the product in the pycnometer and the known volume of the pycnometer.

Pycnometer Working Method:

  • This glass material is brought to constant weighing so that there is no moisture left in it and stored in the desiccator;
  • When it is empty, its mass is checked on a precision scale;
  • Then, after it is filled to the top with the relevant liquid, the overflow cover is closed on it and the excess volume is thrown out, and then it is dried with a paper towel so that there is no wetness;
  • Then its gross mass is measured again with a precision balance;
  • Net gross - from tare the net liquid mass is calculated;
  • Density - The density of the liquid at a certain temperature is calculated from the mass/volume.
