The method is suitable for ventilated products. For example, emulsion paints often trap small air bubbles, which may still be present when the density is measured. However, it is not suitable for textured paints containing coarse particles.
The tested product is compressed in a cylindrical pressure vessel to reduce any error from unremoved air bubbles. Density is calculated from the mass of the product and the volume of the cylinder. Air dissolves more at higher pressures and dissolution is thought to be the main mechanism of bubble removal. Undissolved bubbles are compressed to a fraction of their original size.
Weigh the disassembled apparatus, making sure it is clean and has traces of oil on its moving parts. Place the piston in its lowest position in the cylinder. Weigh the entire apparatus to the nearest 10 mg. Bring the instrument and test sample to the specified or agreed temperature by placing them next to the balance for at least 30 minutes.
Pour the test sample into the cylinder until it is nearly full and allow sufficient time for the test sample and cylinder to equilibrate at the test temperature. Confirm the temperature is correct using the thermometer. Secure the pressure relief cap in place according to the manufacturer's instructions.
