This standard specifies a method for determining the non-volatile matter by volume (NV V) of coating materials and related products by measuring the density of a dried coating for any given temperature range and drying or curing time. This standard specifies the non-volatile substance immediately after application.

It is possible to calculate the spreading rate of coating materials using the results of nonvolatile matter by volume obtained according to this standard.

The method specified in this standard is the preferred method for air-drying materials. Its use for other materials has not yet been tested.

The hopper selection will depend on the type of coating being measured. Discs should preferably be used for paints with low viscosity and thinned paints for spray application. The plates can be used for thixotropic or other coatings that can be pulled down with a scraper blade, or for dip applied paints.

This standard does not apply to coating materials where the critical pigment volume concentration is exceeded.
