Compressed solid biomass fuel is usually assigned either to pellets or briquettes; the diameter of their pellets is usually less than 25 mm, whereas the diameter of the briquettes is higher. It was necessary to define different test apparatuses to account for different particle sizes.

The test portion is subjected to controlled shocks as the briquettes hit each other and the walls of a particular rotating test chamber. Strength is calculated from the sample mass remaining after separation of worn and finely crushed particles.

The partition must be welded along its length parallel to the axis of the drum and perpendicular to the tangent of the curve, up to the full height of the inner curved surface of the drum. The pod end must be shaped with a smooth 90° curve to obtain a perpendicular edge to the pod. The radius of the curve will be r=10 mm and the total vertical height of the curved tip will be 30 mm.

Depending on the briquette diameter, a metal mesh screen in accordance with ISO 2-3 should be selected so that the aperture size is approximately 45/3310 of the briquette diameter or diagonal and does not exceed 1 mm. The sieve is selected from the series between 3310 mm and 1 mm in accordance with ISO 16-45. The diameter of the sieve shall be 400 mm or greater.
