ISO 3613 Metallic and Other Inorganic Coatings - Chromate Conversion Coatings on Zinc, Cadmium, Aluminum-Zinc Alloys and Zinc-Aluminum Alloys

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 3613 standard. The ISO 3613 standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the presence of colorless chromate conversion coatings, zinc or cadmium or aluminum-zinc (mass fraction of aluminum: 55%, in the range of 54% to 56% by mass) and zinc-aluminum (mass fraction of aluminum) : 5%) specifies methods for total chromium content per unit area on alloys, zinc and cadmium, mass per unit area of both colorless and colored coatings, satisfactory adhesion of chromate conversion coatings, and quality of chromate coatings.

ISO 3613 Metallic and Other Inorganic Coatings - Chromate Conversion Coatings on Zinc, Cadmium, Aluminum-Zinc Alloys and Zinc-Aluminum Alloys

It is applicable to colorless and colored chromate conversion coatings containing varying proportions of trivalent and hexavalent chromium and produced by chemical or electrochemical processes, and chromate coatings that do not contain any additional coatings such as oil, water or solvent based polymers or wax.

This standard specifies methods for the qualitative determination of the total chromium content of chromate conversion coatings as well as the presence of chromate conversion coatings.

The application of very thin, colorless, almost invisible chromate conversion coatings is often called "passivation", while the application of thicker, colored chromate conversion coatings is called "chromating". The term "passivation" is not correct as it does not meet the ISO 2080 definition and is therefore deprecated.

Chromate conversion coatings are based on a solution containing Cr(VI). Both the process solution and the coating contain hexavalent chromium. The term passivation is now generally used for Cr(VI)-free coatings that replace chromate conversion coatings. Products containing Cr(VI) are not allowed within the EU and transactions using Cr(VI) are strictly regulated.

This standard requires the use of substances and/or procedures that may be harmful to health if adequate safety precautions are not taken. This document does not address any health hazards, safety or environmental issues associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate health, safety and environmentally acceptable practices and to take appropriate action for any national and international regulation.
