ISO 37 Standard Test for Determination of Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Tensile Stress - Strain Properties

ISO 37 specifies a method for determining the tensile stress-strain properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. The properties that can be determined are tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at a given elongation, elongation at a given stress, stress at yield, and elongation at yield. Measurement of stress and strain at yield point is only valid for some thermoplastic rubbers and some other compounds.

ISO 37 Standard Test for Determination of Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Tensile Stress - Strain Properties

Standard test pieces such as dumbbells or rings are stretched in a tensile testing machine at a constant speed of movement of the driven clutch or pulley. Force and elongation readings are taken as needed during continuous stretching of the test piece and when it breaks.

Dumbbell and ring test pieces do not necessarily give the same values for their respective stress-strain properties. This is mainly because in tensioned rings the stress is not uniform across the cross section. A second factor is the presence of "grain", which can cause the dumbbells to give different values depending on whether their lengths are parallel or at right angles to the grain.

Miniature test pieces may yield slightly different, often higher, values of breaking strength and elongation at break than larger test pieces.
