Not all oily and similar substances can be obtained from the skin with organic solvents; they may be partially soluble and partially bound to the skin. On the other hand, the solvent can dissolve non-oily substances such as sulfur and preservatives, both of which make it difficult to determine the acidity and saponification value of the oil.
This standard includes two techniques for the extraction of oily substances:
Since the extraction is often done in conjunction with the determination of the free fatty acid content of the skin, a suitable procedure is included for the determination of the free fatty acids extracted by this method.
The apparatus and technique described in this method are also suitable for extraction with solvents other than dichloromethane (although temperature conditions may need to be changed for high pressure extraction).
