DIN 53516 Testing of Rubber and Elastomers - Determination of Wear Resistance

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of DIN 53516 testing. DIN 53516, a European standard, defines a test method for determining the wear resistance of rubber and elastomers. One way to determine the abrasion resistance of rubber is to perform the abrasion resistance test described in the DIN 53516 standard.

DIN 53516 Testing of Rubber and Elastomers - Determination of Wear Resistance

This test is generally performed for tires, bases and conveyor/drive belts. These materials are exposed to a lot of stress and wear in real service. On the other hand, these materials are expected to be resistant to wear throughout their lifetime. This testing method is also useful in evaluating hoses and rubber floor coverings.

Durable materials are a sign of better quality. However, the test method in question is by no means a definitive determinant of the actual abrasion resistance of a rubber material. However, it offers a close approach to this.

The rubber abrasion tester used in the tests has a system consisting of only a few components. It consists of a drive system, a rotating cylindrical drum and a movable test piece holder. Some testers have a counter for the number of revolutions the drum makes. An abrasive layer covers the entire length of the cylindrical drum. This abrasive medium is a special grit attached to the drum with strong adhesive tapes. The abrasive plate scrapes material from a test piece and provides an average mass loss of 180 to 220 mg.

There are various standards that contain test methods to determine the wear resistance of rubbers and elastomers. Such as DIN 53516 standard as well as ASTM D5963, ISO 4649 and BS 903 standards. The German DIN 53516 standard is an older standard that replaced the ISO 4649 wear standard. However, today the DIN 53516 standard is still valuable and referenced in terms of conformity.

The wear resistance test described in the DIN 53516 standard is now widely used in areas such as textile, leather, clothing, rubber, automotive, aviation, bearings and seals, rubber rollers, plastic and rubber manufacturers and R&D facilities.
