Surface hardness is determined by measuring the permanent indentation depth produced by a steel ball placed on the surface under a standard load. Surface hardness is calculated as the load on the ball separated by the indentation surface area.
A hardness tester capable of applying a starting and a main load vertically on a steel ball with precise measurement of vertical movement using a dial gauge with 0,001mm scale pitch is applied. The steel ball may be embedded in the end of a steel rod through which loads are applied.
