EN ISO 7783 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Water Vapor Permeability Properties - Container Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 7783 standard. This standard specifies a method for determining the water vapor transmission properties of coatings of paints, varnishes and related products.

EN ISO 7783 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Water Vapor Permeability Properties - Container Method

As far as possible the procedures, definitions and calculations are taken from ISO 12572. ISO 12572 can be consulted if necessary for a better understanding of the procedure outlined in this document.

Water vapor transfer rates above 680 g/(m2⋅d) (ie water vapor diffusion equivalent air layer thicknesses, sd, less than 0,03 m) were not measured accurately with the test method described in this document.

EN ISO 7783 Test Practice

A test assembly consisting of a self-supporting coating sealed at the rim of a container or a non-self-supporting coating on a porous substrate is placed in a test enclosure maintained at a specified temperature (eg 23 °C) and relative humidity (eg 50%). The relative humidity in the container is maintained at a constant level.

Due to the difference between the partial pressure of the water vapor in the test vessel and the partial pressure of the water vapor in the test enclosure, water vapor is emitted from the tested coating. The test setup is weighed at appropriate time intervals and the change in mass of the test setup is followed.

Substrate for non-self-supporting pavements Any homogeneous, porous material with a water vapor transmission rate above 240 g/(m2.d) is suitable for use as a substrate for non-self-supporting pavements, e.g. polyethylene frits, cellular concrete discs, glass frits, unglazed ceramic tiles.

When using cellular-concrete surfaces, the coating should be applied to the smooth side.
The tested lithe coating system does not contain a primer and it is necessary to use one before applying the tested coating system, do so, but the transmission rate of the primed substrate will need to be determined separately.
