ISO 48-4 Rubber - Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Determination of Hardness - Part 4: Standard Test for Indentation Hardness by Durometer Method

This standard specifies a method for determining the indentation hardness (Shore hardness) of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber using durometers with the following scales:

• A scale for rubbers in the normal hardness range;
• D scale for rubbers in the high hardness range;
• AO scale for low hardness rubbers and porous rubbers;
• AM scale for thin rubber test pieces in the normal hardness range.

Durometers were originally portable, hand-held instruments that proved particularly suitable for measuring on products. Until now, many labs also use it on a stand with a weight applied to the presser foot to significantly increase accuracy.

An indentation of certain dimensions is pressed against a test piece under a certain load and the depth of the indentation is measured. This indentation is converted into a hardness value by means of a certain relationship.

This is a device that allows the size of the protrusion beyond the face of the presser foot to be read from the end of the indentation. It should be calibrated directly in units ranging from 2,50 for a maximum overhang of 0,02 mm ± 0 mm to 100 for a zero overhang obtained by placing the presser foot and recess in firm contact with a suitable flat, hard surface.
