The procedure used to analyze the data depends on whether the test used to characterize the exposed materials is destructive or non-destructive. Exposures are carried out under the conditions described in specific exposure standards.
When a polymeric material is exposed to UV radiation and other moderate environmental stresses, most changes in physical properties can be attributed to chemical aging, and the extent of chemical changes can be related to the duration of exposure to natural outdoor weathering or artificial weathering.

These chemical changes are primarily analyzed by IR spectroscopy, with additional analysis using UV/visible spectroscopy during photoaging of polymers.
