ISO 4589-1 Plastics - Determination of Combustion Behavior by Oxygen Index - General Requirements

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 4589-1 testing. ISO 4589-1 specifies general requirements for oxygen index (OI) testing, which are described in more detail in ISO 4589‑2 and ISO 4589‑3 as follows:

ISO 4589-1 Plastics - Determination of Combustion Behavior by Oxygen Index - General Requirements

ISO 4589‑2 describes a method for determining the minimum volume fraction of oxygen in a given mixture of oxygen and nitrogen at 23 °C ± 2 °C, which will only support combustion of a material under certain test conditions.

ISO 4589‑3 describes methods for performing the same determination over a temperature range typically between 25 °C and 150 °C (although temperatures up to 400 °C can be used).

In ISO 4589-2, the material may be tested as a solid sample or as a flexible sample in a specified holder mounted in a transparent chimney through which a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen flows upwards in a laminar flow pattern.

After sample conditioning, the test is performed at room temperature. This creates the test in its simplest form. In the top surface ignition procedure, the applied flame is allowed to strike the top surface of the sample for a maximum period of 5 s, with the flame being periodically removed every 30 seconds to check that the sample is burning.

This also ensures that the sample temperature does not rise excessively as this would normally lower the OI value. In the spread-ignition procedure, the flame is allowed to strike down the vertical edges of the sample to a depth of about 6 mm. In the thin film procedure, the film is wrapped and taped in a 45° spiral around a rod, then the rod is withdrawn and the upper end of the sample is cut at a distance of 20 mm from the top.

Various types of apparatus are available that meet ISO 4589-2 and ISO 4589-3 specifications. Some models have flow meters, valves or oxygen analyzers. Some models are modular and allow an upgrade to a heated model at a later date. A full description of the device can be found in ISO 4589-2 and ISO 4589-3.
