ISO 4628-1 defines a system for determining the amount and size of defects and the intensity of changes in the appearance of coatings, and outlines the general principles of the system used in ISO 4628.
This system is specifically for uniform changes such as yellowing and imperfections caused by aging and weathering.
Other parts of ISO 4628 provide pictorial standards or other tools for assessing certain types of defects. As far as possible, already existing assessment schemes were used as the basis. ISO 4628-1 is also used to evaluate defects not covered in other parts of ISO 4628.
A uniform convention has been adopted to indicate the amount and extent of defects and the intensity of changes by means of grades ranging from 0 to 5, with 0 indicating no defects or changes, and 5 being severe enough to indicate defects or changes.
