This International standard specifies two methods for determining the airflow resistance of porous materials for acoustic applications. It can be applied to test specimens cut from the products of porous materials.
It meets the passage of controlled unidirectional airflow through a circular cylindrical or rectangular parallelepiped test specimen and the measurement of the pressure drop between the two free faces of the test specimen. It allows a slowly varying airflow to be passed through a circular cylindrical or rectangular parallelepiped test specimen and measure the varying component of pressure in a test volume enclosed by the specimen.
The overall height of the cell should be such that there is essentially a laminar non-directional air flow into and out of the test sample. The height must be at least 100 mm greater than the thickness of the test sample.
The test sample must be positioned inside the measuring cell (if necessary on a perforated support), sufficiently above the bottom of the cell to meet the above requirement. This support shall have a minimum 50% open area evenly distributed. The diameter of the holes in the support should not be less than 3 mm. The discharge points for pressure and airflow measurement must be sealed and arranged below the perforated support level.
Whatever source of airflow is used, the installation must allow precise control of flow and ensure flow stability at the bottom of the test cell. The airflow source should provide airflow velocities such that the resulting velocities are low enough to ensure that the measured airflow resistances are velocity independent.
