ISO 4898 Rigid Cellular Plastics - Thermal Insulation Products for Buildings

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 4898 standard. The ISO 4898 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies the requirements and test methods for three categories of solid cellular plastic thermal insulation products for buildings. It covers rigid cellular plastics in the form of flat or profiled sheets, with or without a natural coating.

They can also be covered or laminated with foil, plastic or metal films or sheets, mineral coatings, paper, cardboard or other materials. ISO 4898 is not applicable to materials used for thermal insulation of pipes and vessels, impact sound absorption or acoustic insulation.

ISO 4898 covers the following cellular materials used in the thermal insulation of buildings:

  • PF based on phenolic polymers;
  • EPS based on expanded polystyrene;
  • XPS based on extruded polystyrene;
  • Polyurethane based PUR.

The limiting quality values in this document are for use in specification of materials between buyer and supplier only and are not intended to be used for design purposes. Additional requirements for specific applications to those specified in this document may be added by agreement between the buyer and supplier.

Physical-property requirements are organized into product categories to meet buyer and supplier needs over a range of end-use applications.

Category I - Suitable for non-load bearing applications such as wall and cavity insulation, ventilated roofs, cavity wall insulation and similar applications.

Category II - Suitable for limited load bearing applications such as recessed roofs, underfloor and similar applications where high temperatures may be encountered and compressive creep resistance is required. Products in this category can also be used for applications listed in category I.

Category III — Suitable for load-bearing applications such as car parks, floors of cold stores, and similar applications that require higher levels of compressive strength and compressive creep resistance. Products in this category can also be used for applications listed in categories I and II.

Linear dimensions should be measured according to ISO 1923 for each of the three panels. If the material has a surface coating, lamination or natural shell, its dimensions will be determined without subtraction.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 4898 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
