International natural stone marketing has brought in a multitude of names to denote different types of stone. Most are traditional names and often reflect the typical color or other natural characteristics and place of origin of the stone, but this is not always the case.
Sometimes the name of a variety includes terms related to the geological classification of the rock (granite, marble, quartzite, etc.), which may or may not coincide with the correct petrological name of the rock. At other times the same name is used to denote different stones, or similar varieties are called by different names.
The purpose of this standard is to consolidate the identification criteria for natural stone varieties, to preserve traditional names and to introduce terms related to their petrological nature, typical color and place of origin.
