This method uses a laboratory space arranged to simulate a pair of horizontally adjacent typical offices or rooms sharing a common suspended ceiling System, Plenum space, and a partition wall. The partition wall extends to the underside of the ceiling system, which may be continuous or discontinuous at the junction.

The quantity measured is the airborne Sound insulation between two rooms of a particular test facility where Sound transmitted through means other than the suspended ceiling and common Plenum area is negligible. This amount is called suspended ceiling normalized level difference.

The method can be extended to include the study of composite ceiling Systems that include the ceiling material and other components such as fixtures and ventilation systems.

The method can also be extended to examine additional Sound insulation that can be achieved by auxiliary Systems, such as material used as Plenum barriers or as support for all or part of the ceiling.

The Sound produced in the source room will be constant and have a continuous spectrum over the frequency range considered. Filters with a bandwidth of at least one-third octave will be used.

The sound power shall be high enough to ensure that the Sound pressure level in the receiving room is at least 10 dB higher than the background level in any frequency band.

The loudspeaker enclosure shall be placed in each room in such a way as to give a sound field as diffused as possible and at a distance from the suspended ceiling where direct radiation on it will not dominate.
