Material Testing

ISO 5832-9 Implants for Surgery - Test Standard for Metallic Materials

This standard specifies the characteristics and corresponding test methods for wrought stainless steel containing 0,25% to 0,50% nitrogen by mass for use in the manufacture of surgical implants where high strength and corrosion resistance are required.

If any of the test pieces fails within the size limits and does not meet the specified requirements, the two repeat test pieces should be tested in the same way for each failed test piece. The alloy will be considered suitable only if both additional test pieces meet the specified requirements.

If a test piece fails outside of the gauge limits, the test is acceptable if the percent elongation after fracture meets the requirements. If the percent elongation after fracture does not meet the requirements, the test will be canceled and retested.

The mechanical properties of a sample obtained from a finished product made of this alloy may differ from those specified in this standard. Other stainless steel requirements for surgical implants can be found in ISO 5832-1.
