ISO 6272-1 Paints and Varnishes - Rapid Deformation (Impact Resistance) Tests - Drop Weight Test, Large Area Indentation

The standard describes a method for assessing the resistance of a dry paint, varnish or related product film to cracking or peeling from a substrate when subjected to deformation caused by a falling weight with a spherical indentation of 20 mm diameter.

The method described is either as a pass/fail test, the test is performed from a drop height and with a given mass to test conformance to a particular specification; or, as a classification test, the minimum mass or drop height at which the pavement cracks or peels from the bottom surface by gradually increasing the drop height or mass.

The terms "impact" and "shockproof" are used in the title and text of ISO 6272-1, but an important feature of the apparatus used is that it produces rapid deformation rather than a true impact.
