The ISO 6488 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a method for determining the water content with the Karl Fischer method. It applies to tobacco from finished products, as well as to raw tobacco. The method is suitable for water content ranging from a mass fraction of at least 2% to 55%.
ISO 6488 covers the standardization of terminology and test methods for tobacco smoke, including unprocessed tobacco, all types of tobacco products, materials used in the manufacture of tobacco products, and environmental tobacco smoke aspects.
Numerous methods are used to determine the water content of tobacco products. However, the most widely used method recently is the Karl Fischer titration method. Titrations are a very important method for detecting water content.
