This part of the ISO 6920 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifies a titrimetric method for determining the total and alkali-soluble calcium and magnesium contents of crude sodium borates for industrial use. Modified procedures are described for specific cases for determining the total calcium content to eliminate interference with silica, iron or aluminum.
The method is that the calcium content expressed as calcium is not less than 0,01% (m/m) and not more than 1,0% (m/m), and the magnesium content, expressed as magnesium, is 0,01% (m/m). m) and not greater than 0,2% (m/m).
Preparation of test solutions; fusion of a test portion with sodium carbonate in the case of total calcium and magnesium content, and an aliquot portion of solution A for alkali soluble calcium and magnesium content.
The calcium content is determined by titration of one aliquot of the test solution with a solution of ethyleneglycol-bis-(2-aminoethyl)-N,N,N',N'-tetra acetic acid, disodium salt (EGTA) using 2-carboxy.
-2'-carboxy-2'-hydroxy-5'-sulfoformazilbenzene (Zincon) as an indicator. The combined magnesium and calcium contents are determined by titration of another aliquot of the test solution with a solution of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid, disodium salt (EDTA) using Mordant black 11/potassium chloride as the indicator, after the addition of the triethanolamine solution and the buffer solution. The magnesium content is calculated by the difference.
