ISO 7206-4 Surgical Implants - Partial and Total Hip Joint Prostheses - Determination of Durability and Performance of Rooted Femoral Components

ISO 7206‑4 specifies a test method for determining the durability properties of stemmed femoral components and stemmed femoral components of total hip joint prostheses used alone in partial hip joints under specified laboratory conditions. It also defines the test conditions and explains how the sample is set up for testing so that important parameters affecting the components are taken into account.

In addition, ISO 7206‑4 specifies test parameters and requirements for the endurance limit of stemmed femoral components tested in accordance with this document. The value of the endurance limit test forces and the corresponding number of load cycles are indicated.

This standard has been developed for prostheses with a plane of symmetry, in which anteversion or antorsion or double curvature has already occurred in the body.

This part of ISO 7206 does not cover methods for examining a test sample after testing; these should be agreed between the testing laboratory and the party sending the sample for testing.

For tests on modular-bodied femoral components, a fluid surrounding the component is specified during testing.

The bottom of the test specimen is embedded in a solid medium and a cyclic load is applied to the head of the test specimen to produce axial compression, biplane bending, and torsion until the specimen fails or the prescribed number of cycles is reached. The sample is then inspected for defects caused by the loading regime.
