Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 7229 standard specifies two methods for measuring gas transmission through rubber or plastic coated fabrics, a property known as permeability.
Measurement of gas permeability of rubber or plastic coated fabrics is important in addition to gasket and diaphragm materials in evaluating materials for products such as recreational boats, balloons or hoses and other gas containers. The permeability of the material is very important when a product is exposed to a differential pressure conditioned environment in the service area.
Persons using this standard should be familiar with normal laboratory practice. This standard does not purport to address all, if any, security issues associated with its use. It is the user's responsibility to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to ensure compliance with any national regulatory requirements.
A test piece is placed at the bottom of the measuring cell, the top is placed in place and the entire unit is put together. Sometimes it is necessary to lightly oil or grease the O-rings to improve their contact with the test piece.
