EN ISO 293 specifies the general principles and procedures to be followed regarding thermoplastics in the preparation of compression molded test specimens and sheets on which the test specimens can be machined or stamped.
Samples in defined condition are required for reproducible test results. Unlike injection molding, the purpose of compression molding is to produce test specimens and sheets for machining or stamping test specimens that are homogeneous and isotropic.
In the compression molding process, mixing of material occurs on a negligible scale. Granules and powders coalesce only at their surfaces, and the preforms (milled sheets) are only partially softened.
Isotropic and homogeneous samples can therefore only be obtained when the molding material itself is homogeneous and isotropic. This situation must be taken into account when processing multiphase materials that preserve their internal structure, such as ABS.
The standard will detail specifications for creating test samples using the compression molding process. These test samples are probably intended for subsequent testing to determine various material properties.
While the standard itself focuses on the compression molding process, references may be found to other standards or procedures for testing the resulting test specimens. These tests include mechanical, thermal or other relevant properties.
