EN 717-3 Wood Based Panels, Determination of Formaldehyde Release, Part 3: Standard Test for Formaldehyde Release by Bottle Method

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 717-3 standard. This European standard specifies a method known as the bottle method for determining the release of formaldehyde from uncoated wood-based panels.

EN 717-3 Wood Based Panels, Determination of Formaldehyde Release, Part 3: Standard Test for Formaldehyde Release by Bottle Method

The principle of the bottle method for measuring formaldehyde release was published by the Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institute. Later, the method was modified in different ways by many authors in many countries. After evaluation of published studies focusing on the method and its reliability, a temperature of 40 ÊC and a period of 3 hours was chosen for this standard.

Formaldehyde release is determined by suspending test pieces of known mass on water in a closed vessel maintained at a constant temperature. The formaldehyde released from the test pieces over a period of time is absorbed by the water. The formaldehyde content of water is determined photometrically by the acetylacetone method and the result is expressed as milligrams of formaldehyde per kilogram of dry plate.
