ISO 8318 Vertical Vibration Test on Filled Transport Packages

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 8318 testing. The international package testing compliance standard specifies two methods. Both of these methods are used to perform a sinusoidal vibration test on a complete, filled transport package or unit load. ISO 8318 package test procedures use variable frequencies to perform these tests. The ISO 8318 standard test method also evaluates the performance of a unit load in terms of the protection it offers to its content.

Each shock and vibration method can be performed as a single test or as part of a series of tests. The single test investigates the effects of vertical vibration. The test sequence measures the ability of a unit load to withstand a vibration hazard distribution system.

Wherever possible, the ISO 8318 random vibration integrity test is performed in exactly the same way as those used for conditioning. In other cases, the test is carried out as close as possible to the atmospheric conditions of those used for conditioning.

The test item is first placed in the fixed position on the vibration table. If a superimposed load is required, the loading procedure will conform to ISO 2234. The packaged product is then subjected to a predetermined vertical sinusoidal vibration. These vibrations can vary up and down between 3 Hz and 100 Hz.

Acceleration is measured with an accelerometer attached to the chart as close as possible to the test item. Finally, horizontal frequency components may be present. It is not recommended that the acceleration exceed 20% of the vertical component value.

A resonance search test is performed over one or more full scan cycles by applying an appropriate low-level acceleration. This can typically range from 0,2 g to 0,5 g. The acceleration is then recorded and measured on the test item and table.

The most severe and critical resonances are determined. These can usually be up to three. Finally, a durability test is performed.

This is accomplished by sweeping over a frequency range ranging from ± 10% of the defined resonant frequency. The procedure is repeated for other selected severe or critical resonances.
