Applies to ceramic cookware intended for the preparation of food by heating. Detection is carried out by extraction of cookware surfaces with hot acetic acid solution (4%) and determination of lead and cadmium extracted by atomic absorption spectroscopic method.

In order to reduce open porosity, increase barrier properties, hardness and environmental durability, and provide texture, shine and color; Metals such as lead and cadmium are used to coat ceramic bodies.

Lead is an ideal glaze component considering its easy machinability, strength and firing range to the ceramic material. It helps to reduce the ignition temperature of the glasses and provides a smooth, shiny appearance.

It is aimed to remove lead and cadmium from the surfaces of the cookware, which would normally come into contact with food and its vapors during cooking, with a hot acetic acid solution.

All reagents shall be of recognized analytical grade. Unless otherwise specified, distilled water or water of equivalent purity will be used.

Laboratory glassware shall comply with the requirements of the appropriate international standards wherever such international standards exist. It shall be made of borosilicate glass as specified in ISO 3585.
