ISO 844 Rigid Cellular Plastics - Determination of Compression Properties

The ISO 844 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies the compressive strength and corresponding relative deformation, compressive stress at 10% relative deformation, and methods for determining the compressive modulus of rigid cellular plastics.

ISO 844 covers two procedures:

Procedure A: It uses crosshead motion to determine compression properties. Procedure A is intended to be used when it is necessary to determine the compressive stress at 10% relative deformation.

Procedure B: It uses strain gauges mounted on the specimen (contact extensometer) or a similar device that directly measures specimen deformation. Procedure B is intended to be used when it is necessary to determine the compression modulus.

The ISO 844 Test is the compressive strength of a cellular material determined by applying a load to a square or circular cross-section test specimen. These test specimens are carefully prepared with the faces parallel to each other and perpendicular to the edges. Test specimens should be conditioned at 23 ± 2°C (73.4 ± 3.6°F) and 50% ± 5% relative humidity for not less than 6 hours.

The test specimens are centered between the two compression plates (photo left) and the load is applied at a constant crosshead or actuator speed. Crosshead movement (displacement) and load are recorded throughout the test. Compressive strength can be determined in one of two ways, Peak or 10% strain stress, depending on the characteristics of the stress-displacement curve.

After testing and analysis, compressive strength, modulus and deformation at maximum load are reported. Data from compression tests provide a standard data acquisition method for research and development and quality control.
