ISO 15113 Rubber - Test Method for Determining Friction Properties

Two test surfaces are brought together under the action of a measured normal load. A mechanism slides one surface over the other at a measured speed, and the force against the motion is tracked and recorded. The ratio of this friction force to the normal load at any instant is the friction coefficient at that moment. The measured coefficient of friction may change as the test progresses, as the test itself will change the surfaces and change the temperature at the interface.

In an ideal device, the line of action of the force-measuring equipment would lie in the plane of the two contacting surfaces. This can be a horizontal or vertical plane.

When a test piece is made from a product, it may not be possible to cut a planar piece of sufficient size. A suitable test piece can be manufactured by assembling several small pieces cut from the product (for example, lengths of a windshield wiper blade can be assembled so that the wiping surfaces form a plane). Three small pieces mounted at the vertices of a triangle will always define a plane.

Materials can be tested as received, but it is recommended that surfaces be brought to some standard conditions if comparison is to be made. Texture is important because, in general, rough surfaces have a lower coefficient of friction when dry than smooth surfaces and a higher coefficient of friction when wet than smooth surfaces. Thus, different coefficients of friction will be observed depending on the preparation method used.
