ISO 845 Cellular Plastics and Rubbers - Determination of Apparent Density

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 845 standard. The ISO 845 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifies a method for determining the apparent total density and apparent core density of cellular plastics and rubbers.

ISO 845 Cellular Plastics and Rubbers - Determination of Apparent Density

If the material to be tested includes coatings formed during a molding/extrusion, the apparent total density or the apparent core density, or both, can be determined. If the material does not have crusts formed during molding, the term "overall density" does not apply. A different method, such as the flotation method, can be used for shaped materials.

Each sample shall have a shape whose volume can be easily calculated. The original cell structure of the material will be cut intact. The size of the sample should preferably be as large as possible, proportional to the apparatus available and the shape of the original material. The total volume of the sample must be at least 100 cm3.

For hard materials, when the apparent total density is determined using a sample cut from a larger sample, the ratio of surface area formed during molding to total volume should be the same for the sample as for the sample.

At least five samples will be tested. The sample may be a manufactured object whose mass and volume can be accurately measured. The total mass and total volume can be used to determine the sample density.

Interlaboratory and interlaboratory accuracy of this test method can be expected to vary for different materials. The results of the five-laboratory joint testing program showed that the measured absolute density differences for certain materials can be limited to 1,7% (with 95% confidence) in a single laboratory.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also ISO 845 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
