ISO 868 Plastics and Ebonite - Determination of Indent Hardness Using a Durometer

ISO 868 specifies a method for determining the indentation hardness of plastics and ebonite by means of two types of durometers. Type A is used for softer materials and type D for harder materials. The method allows measuring the initial indentation, or the indentation after a certain time, or both.

ISO 868 Plastics and Ebonite - Determination of Indent Hardness Using a Durometer

This method is primarily an experimental method for control purposes. There is no simple relationship between the indentation hardness determined by this method and any essential property of the material tested. For specification purposes, it is recommended to use ISO 48, Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic hardness determination (hardness between 10 IRHD and 100 IRHD) for softer materials.

A certain indentation is forced into the test material under the specified conditions and the measured depth of penetration. The indentation hardness is inversely proportional to penetration and depends on the modulus of elasticity and the viscoelastic properties of the material. The shape of the indentation, the force applied to it, and the time of application affect the results obtained, so there may not be a simple correlation between results obtained with one type of durometer and results obtained with another type of durometer or another instrument.

For materials whose hardness is not dependent on relative humidity, the durometer and test specimens should be conditioned at test temperature for at least 1 hour prior to testing. For materials whose hardness is dependent on relative humidity, test specimens should be conditioned to GB/T 2918 or the relevant material specification.

When the durometer is moved from below room temperature to a higher temperature location, immediately after removal it should be placed in a suitable desiccator or airtight container and allowed to remain there until the temperature of the durometer is above the dew point.
