ISO 9073-18 specifies a grip tensile test procedure for determining the breaking strength and elongation of most nonwovens. Contains instructions for testing wet samples.
This grab pull test procedure applies to most nonwovens, but is not recommended for highly tensile nonwovens.
Using a tensile testing machine, centrally mount a 100 mm wide specimen with 25 mm clamps at both ends of the specimen. The tensile testing machine applies force until the specimen breaks. Values for the breaking force and elongation of the test specimen are obtained from tensile testers by saving charts or a computer interface.
This test is done to simulate the stress that a medical practitioner would place on the elbow or other similar pressure points of the surgical gown. This stress at the elbow of the surgical gown is not repeated with a strip pull test because in the scoop pull test the adjacent material provides additional strength.
The grip test procedure is applicable to the determination of the working strength of nonwoven material. There is no direct relationship between grip tests and strip tests.
