ISO 9073-4 Nonwovens - Test Methods - Part 4: Determination of Tear Resistance by Trapezoid Procedure

The ISO 9073-4 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), specifies a procedure for determining the tearing force of nonwoven textile fabrics using the trapezoidal method. A rectangular sample is marked and prepared so that it can be loaded at an angle to the grip surfaces, allowing a tear to spread throughout the sample.

For this test, it is important to have an increased test data rate to ensure a high number of data points are captured. This is because when individual fibers in the fabric fail, the data rate must be fast enough to catch those peaks.

Pneumatic side action jaws with rubber coated jaw surfaces are well suited for clamping trapezoidal specimens. While manual action grips will work, many opt for pneumatic side action grips for ease of use, productivity and better repeatability. Adjustable grip pressure also allows users to fine-tune grip pressure to prevent jaw breakage or slippage.

The challenges of testing this standard are:

  • Fast data capture rate
  • sample holding

The fast data capture rate, together with EUROLAB's engineers, ensures that data peaks and valleys are accurately captured at up to 2.500 points per second. Instron pneumatic side action grips with rubber surface are well suited for gripping almost any fabric sample for this test while providing high efficiency.
