The materials can then be ranked by comparing their heat transfer indices, which provide an indication of the relative heat conduction under specified test conditions. The heat transfer index should not be taken as a measure of the duration of protection given by materials tested under actual conditions of use.
Heat conduction through clothing is largely determined by its thickness, including the air spaces trapped between adjacent layers. Air gaps can vary considerably in different areas of the same clothing group. This allows materials to be rated when tested under standard test conditions without a standard air gap.
